Arrival of Acting Yosemite Superintendent -
Dave Uberuaga has arrived in Yosemite to support us as the acting Superintendent for the next few months. He comes to us from Mt. Rainier where he has worked for the past 24 years. He will be participating in the All Supervisors meeting in El Portal on January 6th and will begin meeting with the Division Chiefs and touring park operations. You will see him out and about so please join us in wishing him a warm welcome.
This is a ski run called "The Burn" which takes off from El Portal View on the Badger Pass Road in Yosemite. It offers some very steep terrain and ends at the lower road so it is great for shuttles.
These were taken the day after Christmas when we had that great cold snowstorm in Yosemite.
People visiting Yosemite Valley this year -- or next, or for the foreseeable future -- are going to find it more difficult to find overnight lodging. The National Park Service permanently closed 233 cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite National Park late in the fall because of the danger from falling rocks. The cabins had been off limits since early October, when the equivalent of hundreds of dump-truck loads of rock hit 17 cabins. Fortunately, no one was injured, but there were about 150 youngsters in the area at the time.
There have been enough rock slides in the park in the last decade that park officials have to take the threat seriously. We agree with the closure decision. The bigger issue is that with these cabins eliminated, Yosemite has lost a third of its visitor lodging units in the last 12 years. In 1996, there were more than 2,300 motel rooms, campsites and cabins available. Today, there are only 1,500. Park officials wanted to restore some of the lodging, but were foiled by a lawsuit pursued by two environmental groups and upheld last spring by a panel of federal judges. At this point, because the park service does not have an approved plan for protecting the Merced River -- specifically crowd management along the banks -- it cannot do anything to increase overnight lodging.

has accepted the Education Branch Chief position being vacated by Kathy
Today was a warm Blue Bird day and it was no different cross country sking on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road. It was so warm we wore just regular shirts and pants.
This is skating past what they call "Clark's View" and is about 6 miles out on the Glacier Pont Road from Badger Pass. This is a great lunch spot with huge vistas of Mt Clark.
This is Yosemite Valley at around 2pm today and it has really warmed up. You can see that the snow is melting pretty good in the sunny areas but is still holding in the shade. The roads are starting to clear up and it is mostly snow tires in Yosemite Valley with it R2 in the Badger Pass area.

This was Badger Pass yesterday, 12/21/08, as the rain moved in around noon. Last night it snowed really good and Badger Pass got several inches of new snow.
The cross country skiing on the Glacier Point road yesterday was perfect. The groomers had smoothed the nice powder to make for perfect skiing. We started at Badger Pass and went all the way to Bridalveil Creek, about 4 miles. It was not crowded at all and we saw 1 snowshoer and 4 skiers.
It started to rain in Yosemite Valley around noon today and the snow level in now quite high, up around 7,000'. This is quite different from last week where the snow level was at 2,000'. The snow is falling off the trees in Yosemite Valley as the snow starts to melt.
It is situated five miles south-southeast of the Chinquapin intersection of Wawona Road (HWY 41 continuation) with Glacier Point Road in the southern area of Yosemite National Park. Glacier Point Road provides the access to this ski area. Badger Pass is at about 7,200 feet (2,200 m) in elevation at the restaurant and services buildings. At the summit of the downhill ski lifts, elevations rise to 7,850'. This 90-acre skiing area provides 10 runs and 4 lifts with downhill, snow tubing and snow boarding facilities.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif., December 18, 2008 – California's first
ski resort, Yosemite's Badger Pass Ski Area, will open on Saturday,
December 20 for downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. The
popular family destination received 24 to 36 inches of new snow since
Sunday night, and groomers are out on the hill today packing down the snow
and building the base.
"We had to wait a little longer this year for Mother Nature to cooperate,"
said Colin Baldock, Manager of Guest Recreation for DNC Parks & Resorts at
Yosemite, Badger Pass' official concessionaire. "Now that the snow is
finally here, we're truly excited for the guests that will ski at Badger
Pass, because they'll be the first to enjoy the major improvements we've
made to the Eagle chairlift. Over two million dollars was spent this past
summer to refurbish the lift, and its riders will notice the comfortable
new chairs and smooth ride to the top of the mountain."
Whether guests visit Yosemite for one day or multiple days, Yosemite's
Badger Pass Ski Area has discounted winter packages that fit anyone's
